Gareth Bale – Profoto & Arri Lighting

Here’s an image of the Welsh professional footballer and winger Gareth Bale. He currently plays for Spanish football club giants Real Madrid.

We took this as part of the adidas F50 campaign. We were commissioned to capture movement in some of the images so we used continuous lighting and a slightly long exposure. Also the player had to be recognisable and cleanly lit. This meant combining two different types of lighting and placing the lights in the right way.

We had two main set-ups; one with 2400w Profoto 8a flash lighting power packs and another with Arri 1.8k hmi continuous light. All hired from PKE Lighting. See more of the adidas F50 shoot in the brands section.

Lighting equipment: 2 x 1.8k Arri Fresnel HMI. 3 x 2400w Profoto Flash Heads. Camera equipment: Hasselblad H4D with Phase One P45 Back. 80mm lens. Exposure times 1/125 – 1/15 second.

Basketball Skills

Here’s a great shot for a local London magazine Hoops of a player from the youth basketball league in London.

Mixing two lighting sources. Continuous tungsten lighting to get the blur and the flash, synced at the end of the exposure to add in a clear image.

See a similar long exposure shoot of a boxer sparring below with more attitude.

Lighting equipment: 1 x 1k Tungsten Redhead. 1 x 2400w Profoto Flash Head with silver umbrella. Camera equipment: Canon 5d mk2. MacBook Pro. Canon 50mm Lens. Exposure times: 1/125 – 1/30 second. f8. ISO 200.

Boxing Long Exposure

Long exposure with tungsten lighting with the flash firing at the end of the exposure.

The Arri 1000w continuous tungsten light creates the motion effect and the Profoto 1200w Profoto Pro7b flash fires at the end of exposure.

Using a large black cloth to absorb the light together with black polyboards either side to do the same. Keeping it as dark as possible.

Lighting equipment: 1 x 1k Tungsten Redhead. 1 x 2400w Profoto Flash Head with silver umbrella. Camera equipment: Canon 5d mk2. MacBook Pro. Canon 50mm Lens. Exposure times: 1/15 – 1 second. f11. ISO 200.
